Having patience and persistence does it right the first time

Having patience and persistence. Lessons from teaching others.

Having patience and persistence allowed me to develop my Drumset technique. It also enabled me to work as a Developmental Therapist for adults and children with disabilities. Just like in drumming, some clients when learning a particular skill, took the better part of a year. Building on the foundation of this skill, I then had to introduce an entirely new concept or idea. The challenge of teaching a person with a disability is a near insurmountable task and can be wrought with frustration, anxiety, grief, excitement, and joy all mixed together. However, the success stories of those who never gave up taught me more about patience and persistence then I ever could learn from spending years behind the Drumset.

In the long run, having patience and persistence is faster then taking shortcuts

The people who succeeded were patient and persistent during the entire process and learned it better then those who took shortcuts. There is an old proverb that says, “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” The same concept can be applied to drumming. Rushing through the learning process can hinder your efforts later on and slow you down. I learned this through personal experience. In my early years, I tried to take as many shortcuts as possible. I ignored what a lot of teachers told me and glossed over foundational material. After spending several years developing bad techniques, I went back to revisit the proper techniques. It took me twice as long to learn them as it should have simply because I had to spend the extra time fixing all of the bad habits. If I had simply done it right the first time I would not have wasted my time in the process.

Having patience and persistence in the music business

The same lessons can be applied to the music business. While some musicians have been fortunate enough to get their recordings in one or two takes, most professional musicians spend months in the studio recording just a single album. That’s because they know that taking shortcuts will cost the producer time and money. They can’t afford to take shortcuts and neither can I. Impatient kitties don’t get the bird.
